We went to see Michael Moore's SICKO.
You can pack just so much into a two hour movie,
but Moore did a great job of digging up the American health care system and showing us the shit that's buried in it. I believe he was able to do this because he's almost inseparable from his Michigan State Spartans cap.
There is no longer any doubt, objectively speaking, that the American health care system is in the control of businessmen, not health care professionals. It is definitely not under the control of the patients, whose trillions of dollars buy us one of the poorest levels of health care in the modern world. I don't say this because Michael Moore says it; the facts were there before Moore made SICKO.
Moore has found a few of the many people victimized by our for-profit businessman-oriented health care system. He has paraded them now for the world to see. But, they were there before Michael Moore showed them to us. And there are millions more just as badly treated and doomed to death by our system.
We will put up with this utterly fucked-up system just as long as the majority of people buy into the litany of false beliefs that we have been sold by the media and the advertisers, that
(1) Our system is the best --- it isn't
(2) That we receive the best care -- we don't
(3) That other countries with their "socialism" receive far less efficient service -- they don't
(4) That providing everyone the free health care they need is impossible -- it isn't.
Go see SICKO. It was the tensest movies I've watched in a long time. I came away convinced that every one of us has to start demanding better from both our government and from our health care providers.
It's also time we actually became the kind, caring, christian nation we pretend to be instead of the grasping, profit-driven, self-centered bunch we have become.
