Home Early

We're back a day early from the Lake Superior shore where we had both good times and rough.

When we camp, we have a tent which attaches to the back of our van. Thus, we can sleep contently on a very comfortable mattress in the van where we are safe from wild things, don't have to sleep on the cold hard ground, and can remain dry even during the fiercest rain storm. This is a great way to sleep and even if it rains or even storms, we enjoy the sense of exposure to the elements without having to suffer.

What's better than sleeping to the sound of rain on the top of the car?

However, this time, the wind blew with such ferocity for such a long time, that almost everyone else who had a tent or a screen room set up had damage. Many of them were simply leveled. It blew unremittingly so that it became tiresome and nerve-wracking. Our tent stood because it was connected to the van, and we didn't dare unhook it to go anywhere.

All day the wind blew and the tent flapped. Pat, who is Marilyn's sister, swore it was blowing 80 miles an hour. I couldn't say that's not true. All night the wind blew, sometimes so hard we heard noises against our van and tent that we have never heard before. In the morning, the electricity was out all over the campgrounds, and the bathrooms were closed because there was no power to pump water. I found a nice discreet bush to step behind, but Pat had to go into the outhouse with its lines of women waiting at the door.

Everything was either wet, or impacted with leaves, bugs, and sand. We packed up and came home. This is not to say we didn't enjoy ourselves. For most of two days, we got out and about, walked the shorelines, picked up some stones for our rock garden, visited property we're interested in, and explored Grand Marais and Newberry.
