We have heard people who don't know any better claim that the harsh winter that much of North America has had is evidence that global warming is a myth.

It is wrong to think that more snow and colder weather go together. In fact, the amount of snow has little to do with the ambient temperature. It can be warmer and snowier.

Apples and oranges.

Monday Morning friends report, Mar.31, 2008

Here in mid Michigan, it has been raining torrentially, and with the ground basically saturated with water and still partially frozen, there are standing lakes all over the place. Spring has not shown itself yet, around here, there have not been any warm days, nothing has begun to turn green, and there are still snow piles sitting around parking lots.

BRANDON INGE - the motion has been made and seconded and has been voted on. Brandon has been made an honorary member of the Birches Friends Club, if for no other reason than that fantastic throw he made on opening day. Besides, everyone likes Brandon and it's good for our reputation to have him hanging around.

IRISH MIKE and AMY - have returned from Florida and he reports on an odd occurrence at the airport. A woman waiting at the gate had forgotten her purse and ;left it sitting in the seating area. It was handed to the pilot and he carried it aboard. Seemed like a breach in security.

MARSHA - is prideful that her South Carolina Gamecocks baseball team has a record so far of 18-7. She also brags about the good weather in Carolina these days. She does like to brag.

SPARTY - is sorrowful for the elimination of Michigan State from the NCAA Tournament by Memphis, but he and Gigi are heading for North Carolina to visit and relax. Be safe!
====

What some friends are talking about:

SPARTY - is upset with the mainstream media for unfairness to the candidates. If they're going to raise hell about one guy's religious supporters, then why not the other one?

The Rev. John Hagee ($1.25 million per year, owner of a 5200 sq ft home, pastor of Cornerstone Church in San Antonio that owns a media group that brings in $18 million a year) endorsed John McCain, with McCain's encouragement, appeared with McCain at a rally, arms around each other - that Rev. Hagee is an "end-times" prophet who supports Israel because he believes that the world's Jews must return to their ancestoral home, and rebuild the the Temple (currently occupied by Muslim mosques)prior to an apocalyptic Armageddon that will lead to the second coming of Christ (at which time the Jews are SOL.) This is the same Rev. Hagee who made not so subtle references to the Roman Catholic church as an "apostate system" and as the "Great Whore of Babylon".

And for weeks the MSM has been continually reminding the voters of something Barac Obama's former pastor once said.

ALICE - sent a reference to this article about the possibility that victims of Katrina may have to repay government money: click She finds this infuriating considering the deals the government has been giving to the wealthy lately:

This is outrageous!! Blackwater gets overpaid daily.
Haliburton gets overpaid daily. Corporate CEO's get
overpaid daily. Baseball stadium owners have gotten
overpaid through subsidies from our pockets-including
our illustrious president! Insurance companies get
overpaid routinely...and on and on and on. I don't
care if every last one of them is over paid according
their calculations. In the situation the recipients
have gone through already, what is $175 million to
several thousand people. It's insane! Take back the
millions in tax breaks for the top one percent. End
the war and use that money. The top earners always
resent every penny the lowest earners get. I don't
care if they were overpaid(who calculated?). I think
it's added cruelty to recall the money. Take it out
of the Company that says they made the mistake.

BILL FROM WNNCO - sent a commentary from Georgie Anne Geyer called CULTURE CLASH STARTS SMALL AT HARVARD CLICK complaining that Harvard has been caving into demands from a Muslim minority:

"WASHINGTON -- If a writer were to make the ultimate satiric remark about Islam's increasing presence in America, he would say something like, "And soon they'll be having the 'call to prayer' in Harvard Square." Except, for those who have been paying attention, the line is neither ironic nor humorous: The call to prayer of a Muslim muezzin or priest was broadcast in Harvard Yard at the Widener Library in Cambridge several times in February, as well as on earlier occasions.

As well, the undergraduate college has this winter restricted one of the three largest gyms on its main campus to "women only" at special hours. The reason? Because a small group of Muslim women students felt that workout clothes violated the prescription that both sexes wear modest dress in shared environments."

Bill Writes

Thank You for this Commentary from Bill From WNNCO:

I must tell you that I am almost 100% opposed to the proposals for the bailout of the housing industry.

First of all I cannot believe that the loans were made initially. It had to be obvious to anybody with an IQ over 40 that the many of those loans would be in default regardless of the economy. Secondly, there was a drive by the Mortgage Brokers to run these loans through just so that they could make a good bonus at year's end. Thirdly, the top "suits" were more than anxious to have these loans go through as it made their companies look good and their stock and bonuses improve. Great material for bundling securities and selling off for huge gains.

The whole thing reeks. Somebody needs to explain the process of "risk" to people. Poor credit on many of the borrowers part is due to foolish use of thier credit. I cannot believe what a "Highland Appliance" mentality this country has ended up with. If you remember Highland's policy was that "If you don't like it bring it back," no questions asked. Well, that policy and other things led them into closing their doors. Why would anybody think that the same policy of the government constantly bailing out everybody will be any different?

I realize
that many like to think
that somebody needs
to protect the poor.
However there has to be a responsible limit.

Oh well! I want a bailout also.

Wacko of the Week -- 03/29/08

Some Possibles:
1. We could give the WACKO trophy this week to HILLARY CLINTON who mis-remembered whether or not people were shooting at her in Bosnia. She said she landed there under sniper fire but press tapes show that didn't happen.

2. We could give the Award to that guy in Hawaii who brought a horse to visit his father in hospital. He actually got the critter up in the elevator. It was "Pet Visiting Day." You guessed it, the father said: "That's not my horse!" CLICK

3. We could give the Award to CHARLES JOHNSTON of Columbus, Georgia, who went into a hospital and murdered his mother's nurse. Then he murdered a guy in the parking lot whom he may have mistaken for a policeman. Of course, one wonders how this gentlemen could acquire five or six guns since he was obviously mentally ill. It's American society that deserves the Award more than Mr. Johnston. We are the ones who let him have all those guns.

4. We could give the award to the BELLINGHAM WASHINGTON FIRE DEPARTMENT. They came and saved an old paper mill that caught fire. You guessed it! The building was under demolition.

SOCIALISM FOR THE RICH

Investment Firms Tap Federal Government  for Billions

Thursday March 20, 5:03 pm ET
By Jeannine Aversa,
AP Economics Writer
Investment Houses Borrow Billions From Fed's Emergency Lending Program

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Big Wall Street investment companies are taking advantage of the Federal Reserve's unprecedented offer to secure emergency loans, the central bank reported Thursday.
The lending is part of a major effort by the Fed to help a financial system in danger of freezing.

Those large firms averaged $13.4 billion in daily borrowing over the past week from the new lending facility. The report does not identify the borrowers.

The Fed, in a bold move Sunday, agreed for the first time to let big investment houses get emergency loans directly from the central bank. This mechanism, similar to one available for commercial banks for years, got under way Monday and will continue for at least six months. It was the broadest use of the Fed's lending authority since the 1930s.

Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers and Morgan Stanley said Wednesday they had begun to test the new lending mechanism.

Republican Humor (44)

All you loyal BIRCHIES out there, if you come across these funny things, send 'em in.

In past elections, there was lots of talk about "lock boxes." The idea was that Social Security should be locked up so the government can never again borrow the money for other things. This item suggests a different lock box in Hillary's hands.

One opinion concerning the Obama speech

I believe that the main theme Mr. Obama put forth in his speech concerning racism was that it is a contradiction which exists in all of us. It exists in the country and has existed for generations. This is what we must overcome, both whites and blacks: this contradiction inside each us between bias and tolerance, between what we know is right and what we feel irrationally. Now is a great time for the races to come together, not to become more divisive.

Why have so many commentators overlooked that theme?

Tuesday Evening Quiz 02/18/08 (Guest offering from Dashmann)

DASHMANN 's (super famous) BATTERY QUIZ

It's great if you know who these pitchers are, but
that's not the only question. The harder question is:

Who do you think the famous catcher is for each

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

6.

So, now, just what IS God thinking?

Barack Obama's pastor, Jeremiah Wright, who I am quite sure is neither Jesus-like nor genius, has uttered some words which I still have not seen in complete context, but they were like this:

"God Bless America? No, Goddamn America!"

Let's overlook for a minute the fire-breathing hatred of the Christian, right-wing,  Non-Jesus-like wackos who would criticize anything about any Democrat. Them I don't take seriously, and that includes Pat Robertson and Sean Hannity.

Seems to me that if God is disposed to bless America, it must be for our goodness; and on the other hand, if we are not good, than we may not be blessed.  I'm inclined to think that if we throw in another Iraq invasion or two, or we water board a few more helpless prisoners, God will be annoyed and may well give us a slap.  Those of you out there who think you're just too precious for God to take a crack at might be mistaken.  Best you duck when America screws up again with your blind approval.

Barney Fife Award #5, Parma Hts., OH police department

PARMA HEIGHTS -- A local police officer is charged with drunk driving, after crashing into his own department's building. Parma Heights police Sgt. Jeff Krepina now finds himself on the other side of the law.

Krepina is patrolling the streets of Parma Heights at night, barely missing a beat, so to speak, since he was arrested for drunk driving.

"He is a good police officer. This is an isolated incident," Parma heights police Capt. Garry Lauter said of Krepina.

Court records indicate that at 5:30 a.m. Dec. 8, Krepina rammed the front of the police department's building with his truck. The vehicle jumped the curb and whacked into the front doors.

ASK BUD [This is a new feature under the BIRCHES]

So far today I have been asked many times whose fault it was that Bear-Stearns went into the toilet so that the government had to bail it out with 30 Billion in guarantees.

Here is the answer: WELFARE QUEENS.

If all those fat broads would get off their asses and go to work and buy a house on credit like other normal Americans, there would not be this credit trouble which is bringing down the  hard-working, patriotic multi-billion dollar corporations . Instead of paying rent, these leeches could be paying mortgages to Bear Stearns and other large debt holders.

Instead, they sit around chewing on their bon-bons and getting pregnant and living off the rest of us. This is why the government has to spend 30 BILLION dollars on Bear Stearns.

What some people are sending

IRISH MIKE - sent this remark concerning the Eliot Spitzer scandal: "To paraphrase Harry Truman, Democrats are always getting caught with their pants down, and Republicans are always getting caught with their hand in your pants."
====

SANDY - forwards this message which she received from her daughter and which is attributed to Charles Shultz of "Peanuts" fame. It's a lesson in 'what really matters':

"You don't have to actually answer the questions. Just read straight through, and you'll get the point.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winner for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners . Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with .

The lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care. "

JERRY - sent this joke appropriate for March 17:

Mary Clancy goes up to Father O'Grady after his Sunday morning service, and she's in tears.
He says, "So what's bothering you, Mary my dear?"
She says, "Oh, Father, I've such terrible news. My husband passed away last night."
The priest says, "Oh, Mary, that's terrible. Tell me, did he have any last requests?"
She says, "That he did, Father..."
The priest says, "What did he ask, Mary?"
She says, "He said, 'Please Mary, put down that damn gun.'

The Journey of Man
When I was 14, I hoped that one day I would have a girlfriend. When I was 16 I got a girlfriend, but there was no passion, so I decided I needed a passionate girl with a zest for life. In college I dated a passionate girl, but she was too emotional. Everything was an emergency; she was a drama queen, cried all the time and threatened suicide. So I decided I needed a girl with stability. When I was 25 I found a very stable girl but she was boring. She was totally predictable and never got excited about anything. Life became so dull that I decided that I needed a girl with some excitement. When I was 28 I found an exciting girl, but I couldn't keep up with her.She rushed from one thing to another, never settling on anything. She did mad impetuous things and made me miserable as often as happy. She was great fun initially and very energetic, but directionless. So I decided to find a girl with some real ambition. When I turned 31, I found a smart ambitious girl with her feet planted firmly on the ground and married her. She was so ambitious that she divorced me and took everything I owned. I am now older and wiser and looking for a girl with big tits.
