It's obvious that the cocaine in her pocket wasn't hers, it belonged to the woman trying to run her over. I beg everyone - please write to Arnie to make sure she doesn't have to go to jail like poor Paris.

On a real news note, have you been following the case of the Indian doctor (Haneef) that was arrested in Brisbane, allegedly because he was involved in the failed London and Glasgow terrorist attacks?? Well, the guy was detained and questioned for 11 days by the Australian Federal Police under the new Anti-Terrorism laws. Then he was finally charged with providing material support to terrorism, but the magistrate granted him bail because of "exceptional circumstances". The exceptional circumstances were that there was hardly any evidence to support the charge. So, the Minister of Immigration promptly cancelled his working visa (on moral character grounds), and ordered that he placed in immigration detention indefinitely. So much for the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law. Needless to say, Haneef has not posted bail and remains in solitary confinement in prison, pending his appeal against the immigration department in early August. The only evidence against him appears to be that a SIM card in his name allegedly was found in the vehicle that rammed into Glasgow Airport. Haneef claims that he gave it to his cousin when we left England and moved to Australia. Well, now it's been revealed that the SIM card wasn't actually in the car, but in a flat in Liverpool where his cousins lived. The police also claimed that Haneef lived there with his cousins, but it ends up that he never did live with them. The whole mess is being "reviewed" now my the Department of Prosecutions - since the police seemed to have stuffed up the brief of evidence beyond belief. There has been widespread public support for Haneef, and the entire legal profession is angry at the goverment's handling of the case. When they introduced these new Anti-Terrorism laws, the Govt claimed that there were powers of judicial review to keep the laws from being abused. But then the Immigration minister trumped the legal process, they've admitted that they cancelled his visa in order to keep him detained until his trial! Looks like there will be no trial and he'll just get deported. Meanwhile, Haneef's wife is in India having just given birth to their first child. What a mess.

This is really interesting. I hadn't been following this. Sounds like the Australian government has the same problem the Bushies do.

Friday morn (in the US)
Irene, I saw on CNN this morning that the man has been freed. This is the first I'd heard of him on the news shows in a number of days. The news report said that the evidence against him --- the memory card --- has been shown to be no evidence of anything.

This "War on Terror" is obviously dangerous to mere stander-bys, like most of us, because bombs are blowing up and planes are going down. But in the process of defending ourseleves we have to find ways to protect our rights as individuals.

Thanks Irene!
