THOMAS RAVENEL, Treasurer of the State of South Carolina
When you are born into tons of money, when your family name is famous all over the place, when you are basking in the protection that family and wealth can bring you, you ought to be careful. Otherwise, you might look just like a spoiled brat.
Like, say, Paris Hilton.
Not only does he have all that unearned inherited privilege, but Thomas Ravenel also has good looks, considerable intelligence, and just oodles of charisma. He has a beautiful family. In 2006, he also ran for and won the job of Treasurer of S. Carolina ... he defeated a well-known and respected honest guy who just didn't have the money and friends that Ravenel had.
So, Thomas Ravenel also had "position" and "respect." People were talking about runnning him for Senator.
Ravenel evidently had one other thing: a taste for snort. This Tuesday he was indicted - not just for cocaine poossession - nope, worse than that. He was indicted for distribution of cocaine.
As one of those Southern, aristocartic, conservative, family-values young men the Republicans are justifiably proud to have in their camp, you would think he would be more careful. Maybe he just depended on his friends to cover him up, like they did Strom Thurmond who couldn't keep his pants on, and "everyone knew it."
Oh, by the way, he was also the SC Campaign Chairperson for Rudy Giuliani.
Now it may be all gone.
