Florida notes

Some
vacation notes
on who, what, and why.

Pat got attacked by a mosquito. This is something that doesn't happen in February in Michigan.

Yesterday evening we golfed but the people ahead of us were so slow that we didn't finish the round before dark. We were paired with a couple from up north, as the reservations computer had assigned. The gentleman said hello as we waited to tee off and only stopped talking (I assume) when we walked away from him on the 7th hole. Called by darkness.

There are some aspects about the Florida experience which tend to discourage one's full enthusiasm. One of these is the frailty of so many of the people we golf with, have to wait in line behind, watch while they're making a decision such as turning a corner, etc. The other day we walked into town and on the way met a woman who literally -- yes I mean literally -- took two steps forward and one step back. At first we believed she must be drunk, but apparently, she was physically impaired. We talked to her and asked if she needed any help, but she said "no" and that she was almost home. When we looked back at her a minute later, she had fallen off the curb and cars and golf carts were stopping to assist her.

An elderly gentleman on a golf cart down the street had a fender bender with a car. Irate, he got off the cart and punched out the woman driver of the car. Jail! Driving under the influence. I mean, it was Super Bowl Sunday, what can you expect?

Heard on the news this morning that here in Florida, which held its primary election a few weeks ago, many people showed up at schools and fire halls around the state asking to vote again on Super Tuesday.

I am grateful to be able to be swimming. So far, the conditions have been wonderful. In the neighborhood pool there are a great many sizable senior citizens floating about. Like me, for example. As BILL from WNNCO joked, "Let's hope the Japanese fishing fleet doesn't hear about this. There will be harpoons flying." I like to go to the exercise pool because there is plenty of room for laps and moving around.

A young fellow (24) near here shot his mother and father to death with his hunting rifle. Then he called the police and said, "Dog, come and get me. I just killed Mom and Dad." When the police arrived he said, "They just got killed, bro." And, what was the reason given for this abuse of the right to bear arms? They were trying to tell him was schizophrenic. It has been suggested that perhaps if they believed this, they ought not to have armed him. Well, little things slip through the cracks sometimes.
