Jay Leno reminds us when we do our Christmas shopping for toys this year, to go to the "Unleaded" section.
Now we know Mattel is really a form of Metal, probably Lead.
Interesting how a Chinese toy executive dealt with the situation though.
Yes, BIRCHES did have a story about the Chinese toy executive who committed suicide, and we recommend the same course of action for the Mattel exec and other toy company execs in America who have been responsible for so much danger and harm.
Company execs taking responsibility for their company? Never! I was thinking the same thing Bud... A few of those Enron guys could have set a good example. In addition to the lack of quality control, I've read that these toy factories are home to thousands of teenage Chinese girls who have moved in from the countryside, work 16 hours a day, and live 10 to a room in factory dormitories. All because of the greed of Western toy companies. I've told my kids that they aren't getting any Chinese-made toys for Christmas/birthdays (a bit mean maybe). I suppose I'm going to have to whittle them a toy whistle or make a corncob doll. The kids pointed out that Santa and the elves don't live in China, Jimmy also has told Georgia that you should ask Santa for all the expensive stuff that Mum won't buy because the stuff from Santa is free. I'm in a bit of a pickle.
You raise some grat points, Irene. I did a very quick search (no more than 6 or 7 minutes) online for toys made in other places and found these references:
German/European Toys:

USA Toys:

So, I bet if you start catelogue shopping fairly early, you'll have a great adventure finding things that can be shipped from all corners of the world. Then of course, there's always the whittling option. :)
The toy companies ceertainly do inhumanely use and house children for cheap labor. So does Walmart; and albeit so do most of the other companies that import chinese manufactured goods. Why do we think they go there in the first place. It's not for anyones good except their own opulence. We who care need to be more vigilant about where the goods we purchase come from. There's an excellent movie out about the Walmart story that addresses this... but I can't think of the name of it. Alice
