Look. We know its a bullshit issue but the question is what will all those other fools who vote believe?

Well, clearly you don't want that picture getting around too much, especially if you're running for President. It's just another one of those way-too-easy misrepresntations that the right wing is so good at. Since Obama clearly says the pledge (hand over heart) and sings the anthem at many other times, he obviously is not making a statement.
Given the nature of campaigning, I imagine it was just a tired candidate collecting his thoughts before speaking.
