Goodbye Dick Rossi
With the death of Dick Rossi, only 4 of the FLYING TIGERS remain alive, heroes from World War II who shot down almost 300 Japanese planes over China.
And, they were volunteers!
After the war, for years, they safely flew American exchange students to and from Europe.

Great photo! I'd never seen that one before.
Actually, I make it just three survivors who flew the P-40 in combat operations for the AVG: Ken Jernstedt, Charlie Bond, and Robert (Buster) Keeton. The fourth pilot was a flight instructor with the Chinese who joined the combat squadrons late in the game. See Flying Tigers: Claire Chennault and His American Volunteers, 1941-1942 for more.
