I suppose it's the promise of a new start, a chance to be a better person, aspire to things, dream of possibilities, etc. But then all this hope and promise seems to last a very short time, particularly if you start the year with a massive hangover.... I too have given up on New Year's Eve - though I did witness a pretty hilarious karaoke session two years ago which reignited my enthusiasm for one night.
