The Mitchell Report

So, George Mitchell has made a report on steroid and other drug use among baseball players. That's what he was hired to do. Here is a man whose whole career has been honorable.

But now, many players are scrambling to deny it all. One top-of-the-line pitcher claims he was "slandered."

If you want to know how to throw a baseball, ask a pitcher. If you want to know how hit a baseball, ask a batter. If you want to know how to cheat without being caught, ask a manager. If you want to know how to sign a check, most baseball players may be able to sign their names. If you want to know how to act priveleged, spoiled and unsophisticated, how to tug on your genitals in public, how to swear proficiently, how to disingenuously thank God for small favors, then ask a baseball player.

But, if you want your child to know how to manage a marriage, or tell the truth, or exhibit magnanimity, or practice humility, or demonstrate respect for the law, then look elsewhere.

Jose Canseco hasn't been proven wrong on accusations in "Juiced" so far. As things come out, looks like he was right on target.
I knew 15 years ago these guys were doing this crap when some of them began to be built like pro wrestlers. Selig lookied the other way on this stuff when the Sosa - McGuire act was taking place, because Baseball was repairing the strike damage. Selig and the owners are as much to blame as any of the players who were just trying to gain a competitive edge.
I can't believe I was smarter than all those people.

It's all about money! The corporations want more. The players want more. The public wants gladiators. Esoteric motives no longer prevail or they get replaced at some point. Sure every one knew. It's when the corporations can "afford" to make a "show" that something will be acknowledged. Mind you I didn'tsay done. We've been bombarded by this stuff for so long that this mornings headline can read: "The Public Shrugs..." Alice

to Dashmann --
I can believe that you got this right long before other people. You are my main sports guru. You are, I know, a fully accredited and respected official in many of these sports. And, you have a great predictive sense, too. Besides, you always get all the right answers on my sports quizzes.

To Alice: Thanks for the compliment. shucks!

If only we could get back to the days of Babe Ruth when ballplayers were virtuous role models for the children of our fine Christian Nation.
