Here is a subject about which I am naive and ignorant, so maybe you all can help me out here. I see that there is a new translation of the Bible about to hit the nation. No one has read it yet, but it's already controversial. CLICK
This is a reliving of the history of all those other translations which have been criticized. Let's say that God actually did inspire the first Bible, he (or she or they) has not, evidently, indicated a preference among all the translations, which are after all, merely translations. Is it OK to read one, by the way, in a Russian translation?

The "Bible" is the product not only of various translations but also of several editors. The idea that it is the literal word of God, word for word, is a fairly recent development, in part a product of the Protestant reformers' emphasis on "scripture only." If you want to open a can of worms (for some)don't focus on translations, explore the various editing decisions.
I've arrived at a point where I want things explained. Sometimes I feel a little like Chris Matthews. "This is hardball," I think. "Explain what you're talking about. If you have no explanation, don't tell me it's the truth."
Where to begin?? Perhaps you should do some exploring.
