The US has an easy road to qualify for the World Cup. Almost as easy as Australia's. But, as Tony always claims, Australia had it too hard for many years, because they had to beat the 5th place South American team in a two game home-away series to qualify. I always said - if you can't beat the 5th best South American team, then you don't deserve to be in the World Cup Finals. What do you think??
I think the U.S. nor Australia may never qualify if we had to confront the sorts of teams that European countries do on the way to the Cup. On the other hand, you're right "deserving".
If you want to go to the big dance, you should probably at least learn to do the Samba.
