JOAN BROE,
Principal,
West Brook Middle School
Paramus, NJ -
====

The school can boast of high scores in every category of testing in the New Jersey System. CLICK FOR RESULTS And principals can rightfully take some credit for the good performance of the kids, although the role of good teachers and parents is even more important!

But, as with many principals, this one can't make the subtle distinctions about religion in schools. We all know that the support of religion by the public schools is unlawful. But when a kid shows up on Halloween dressed as Jesus, when other kids are also in costumes, you don't send him home for being disruptive. Let's assume that the school day was already disrupted by the costumes everyone was wearing. Broe did find it disruptive, however, and she maintains she made no mistake.

Kim Wolinski, the "messiah's" mother, disagrees. "I think the whole freedom of speech and expression has definitely had a damper put on it ,,,"

Shame on you, principal: you let Halloween drive you wacky. But at the same time, congratulations on winning this prestigious award.
