Totally class reporter. His commentary during the 1972 Olympics hostage crisis demonstrated his professionalism, overshadowing his always fine work as a sportscaster. Only Al Michaels 1987 Baseball World Series San Francisco earthquake coverage rivaled McKay's work in Germany. The two finest examples of mere sportscasters suddenly thrust into real life tragic circumstances and not only covering as well as, but eclipsing the work of news correspondents. McKay, a man short in stature, demonstrated a wry sense of humor when covering the Indy 500, referring to the equally diminutive driver - reporter Jackie Stewart as a " man of average height ". McKays pioneering work on " Wide World of Sports" lives as a model of what ESPN and FSN. etc. are still doing today. May he rest in victory - no more agony of defeat------
