Germfask

We spent four days in the Central Upper Peninsula. Here we are camped and ready for rain, at Germfask, Mi., August 1, 2007. And the rain came. Much needed.

Trivia you probably already know: Germfask was named for the eight families that originally settled in that location. The name of the town is basically a pronounceable arrangement of the eight initials of their family names.

I did not know that. It's very interesting. I was assuming it was some reflection of "German" background, like the place names Frankenmuth, Frankentrost, Frankenlust, etc., in mid-Michigan.

this verdant country, As a family historian/genealogist, I'd love to know the surnames of those 8 families. Could you possibly please supply them? Alice

From wikipedia:
"...the name is derived from the surname initials of the eight founding settlers of 1881: John Grant, Matthew Edge, George Robinson, Thaddeus Mead, Dr. W. W. French, Ezekiel Ackley, Oscar (O.D.) Sheppard, and Hezekiah Knaggs."
