This is Japan's bullet train readying for it's next run. At 180-190 miles-per-hour, it will make the run in short order. Here are some other countries who have invested heavily in bullet trains, and who are finding them very efficacious: France, Germany, Japan, China, Spain.
What if America decided to build such a system, even just coast-to-coast. What if we required that the trains be American-made? What if we required that the electronics to operate the system safely, be American made. What if we required that the materials to rebuild the crossings of rivers and roadways be American manufactured? What if we made the Federal government and the state governments partners with private corporations in the ownership/running of the system?
What a recession buster the whole thing would be. And what a tremendous answer to the collapsing airline industry.

I think it would be great. It'd probably require a social movement. Sounds too logical to be allowed by the corporations and airlines in power. The profits would be spread too much and we really don't want a populace that is happy, do we? I'm just reading The Rockerfeller Dynasty: An American Family. It's amazing!!! how "their people were and are intricately involved in every aspect and system in this country.
Great idea. But - air travel is so cheap in the US, I'm not sure if these trains could compete in price, but if the airline industry collapses.... The problem with a govt/private partnership is that the private partner will want to cut costs as much as possible, and not be constrained by the "buy American" restrictions. The govt may not find any private companies willing to come on board. The experience here is that the govt (taxpayer)takes all the risk and the private companies take all the profits. Typical!
What you are forgetting is we have no manufacturing capable of producing such a marvel. It would bankrupt the transportation department of the government. But then who cares if they are bankrupt financially, they already are mentally. There are no forward thinkers in government.
