is he?

I saw Dave Somebodyorother on TV this morning commenting on the AP's selection of Tiger Woods as "Athlete of the Decade" and he was saying this perpetuates two myths: That Tiger is an athlete and that golf is a sport.

BIRCHES welcomes comment on these charges.

Television is a haven for Know-nothings - we would all do well to add televison to the "foods" we'll be trying to avoid over the next few weeks. Purging white flour, sugar, and television "news" from our systems will make us all feel better.

It's ironic, me thinks, that Jimmy Johnson was the Male Athlete of the Year for 2009, too. Race car drivers fall into the same category of "are they athletes"?

What about yachting? I suppose they need to have experience and knowledge, but they also need a whopping big load of cash. On another note, my favourite golf joke:
How does a tiger change his stripes? When he becomes a cheetah.

Perhaps, given what we now know, Tiger wasn't selected for his athletic prowess on a golf course, after all. Maybe writers were impressed with his prowess in another venue.

In other words, he didn't get it for golf, he got it for his gymnastics skills? Especially the floor routine, I guess.

The TV guy was saying that any activity that c an be done while eating or smoking is not a sport.

From Merriam/Webster
Main Entry: ath·lete
Pronunciation: \ˈath-ˌlēt, ÷ˈa-thə-ˌlēt\
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Latin athleta, from Greek athlētēs, from athlein to contend for a prize, from athlon prize, contest
Date: 15th century
: a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina

I believe strength, agility and stamina are all traits Tiger has
demonstrated to be instrumental in his golf game.
Those three elements had to be present in his off the course activities in order for his on the course triumphs to take place !!
Unless he just laid there like a whore and just let it happen --

All moral issues aside, Tiger is my athlete of the decade too !!!
