A Stand of Birches

A Stand of Birches: Some things we believe in:

1. Preserving and Conserving the Environment and the Wildlife.
2. Our democracy
3. The Freedom of Religion -- yours and mine both.
4. Public education
5. Sharing Ideas (and laughs)
6. Pestering privileged people

I like them all, but #4 is particularly meaningful to me at the moment. We have to make a decision soon where to send our 7 year old and 4 year old to high school... we may have already missed the boat! We want to go public, but the govt is running the state system into the ground. The government provides funding for both state and private schools here, and the funding for state schools has been declining while funnily enough, the funding for private schools increasing. Of course the fees for private schools haven't decreased as a result of this extra govt funding. If you want a case study in how to run an equitable and successful public education system into the ground, just look at Australia over the past 10 years. Not long ago, university education was FREE in this country. Now someone wanting to study at university no longer needs the best grades, just the most money. Infuriating. And if you want a case study in how to run a public health care system into the ground, look at Australia over the past ten years. If this govt is not turfed out in the elections later this year, then I'm moving to New Zealand (I've been saying this for years, but I'm serious this time!)

Thank you, Irene. I think that public education is important to democracy in general, and has been a great benefit to America in particular. This is how so many people from so many cluntries have been assimilated in American society.
