Goodbye Gore Vidal
"As societies grow decadent, the language grows decadent, too. Words are used to disguise, not to illuminate, action: you liberate a city by destroying it. Words are to confuse, so that at election time people will solemnly vote against their own interests."

A wonderful pairing was done with the 1968 Democratic Convention television airing (If I remember correctly which I often do not!) at which the wonderful pairing of William F. Buckley and Gore Vidal were the "color commentators". In reponse to a question of how to fix a certain problem in society Gore Vidal responded "My roll is not to fix problems but to simply point them out".
Great exchanges between two bright people on opposite sides of issues. However, even with their diametrically opposite positions they were still civil in their exchanges.
